Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra (inset) is in Chennai to give the final musical touch to his third directorial vehicle, Delhi-6.
There are very high expectations for the film which, among many things, is a love story but more importantly the story of a complex inner journey. Mehra's previous film, Rang De Basanti, was a critical and box-office hit.
He has worked for the second time with UTV Motion Pictures, which also co-produced and distributed RDB.
He established Flicks Motion Picture Company Private Limited in 1986 and has directed over 150 commercials for Indian and international clients. His credits include ad films for Coke, Pepsi, Toyota, American Express, Shell, and BPL Electronics. He has also directed music videos, like Aby Baby starring Amitabh Bachchan.
Eyes twinkling, Mehra speaks animatedly about his new venture to Rediff India Abroad's Arthur J Pais.
Are you nervous about Delhi-6?
To say that I am very nervous would be an understatement. I am a nervous wreck. I know the film has a very broad appeal and could be a big success with overseas Indians partly because Roshan [the character played by Abhishek Bachchan] is a young man who has grown up in the melting pot that is America and comes to India to leave his grandmother [Waheeda Rehman], who wants to spend her last years in the country of her birth. I also expect this film to strike a chord with people of all ages across India and in the Diaspora.
This is a film of many inner journeys, particularly that of Roshan's. Even before I began shooting the film, I felt I was going on a very difficult, and often a dark journey. Om Puri, who called me in the middle of the night soon after
